Art Experience Gallery is delighted to present to you “Glimmering Light - Solo Exhibition of Hiroshi Mori”, the very first solo exhibition of Hiroshi Mori in Hong Kong, from 18 May 2013 to 29 June 2013.

The glittering gold base tone, splendid colors and patterns performed in the glamorous stage define the modern version of the classic scene The Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary from the Bible. The work depicts the Christian story of Archangel Gabriel, the messenger of God, was sent to the Virgin Mary to announce that she will conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the son of God. Though the scene has been recreated by many different artists over the centuries, yet the Virgin Mary illustrated in the many art works is always delighted for her profound experience. Japanese artist Hiroshi Mori has reinterpreted the ancient story and created the Memories series in a modern context. Similarly, he has used the architectural features of the Renaissance period as the background of his art works, while the characters, animals, insects and sceneries depicted connote rich symbolic meanings and bring a distinctive visual experience to the audiences.

In the Memories series, the artist has transformed the archangel and the Virgin Mary into teenagers in Japanese manga, mixing in explosions and the Ukiyio-e master Katsushika Hokusai’s signature Great Wave as metaphors of nuclear power plant explosion and tsunami caused by earthquake. The Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster incurred by the Tohoku earthquake in 2011 has caused tremendous worries about fertility among the local women. Therefore, when the teenage girl is told about her pregnancy against the background of nuclear explosion, she appears to become bewildered and disturbed.

In addition, each creature in the art works conveys its respective symbolic meanings. The butterflies are representation of the soul’s journey to heaven; hares suggest the fear of death; lizards symbolize rebirth; while carps signify long life. The artist expresses his deep remorse of the disaster and hope for rebirth by using various symbolisms of flowers and birds in his work. Although the disaster is irreversible to the people of Japan, Hiroshi Mori, nevertheless, brings out the cruel reality in a relaxed and humorous manner in attempt to bring others comfort and hope for the future.

As a contemporary artist, Hiroshi Mori never stops developing the possibilities of combining new technologies with art as proofs of living in the epoch of modern timesity. He also thinks that the very essence of Japanese spirit is to absorb outstanding and beautiful subjects and transform them into a unique demonstration of the Japanese creativity. After multiple experiments with pigments and audacious mixes of miscellaneous elements, the works of Hiroshi Mori have become attention-getters with bold, outspoken attitude. The tremendous amount of gold used in his works is a representation of hope, symbolizing the existing hope and brightness in today’s adverse circumstances.

Hiroshi Mori wishes that the audiences will be able to echo with his works and feel spiritually healed by the brightness and hopes he tries to communicate across. Moreover, he wants to awake our consciousness regarding the damage to the nature caused by human beings and the undesirable consequences it brings about.
