Harry Holland is a widely respected contemporary, figurative and realist painter. His most recent work is hosted at Mineta Fine Art Brussels, established by Maria Mineta in 1998 at the Etangs d’Ixelles quarter.
Underlying meanings
Harry Holland has created over several decades a body of work which is easily recognizable. His treatment of light and form occupies a specific space between evidence and mystery. Both rational and irrational elements are crucial for understanding the underlying meaning. Underlying his mastery of the painting technique, often taken as the only identification of the work, is a subversive attitude created through imbued relations between people and objects. Ordinary people are engaged in rituals that transforms reality into hidden narrative implications.
From nudes to still life
Considered one of Britain's best craftsmen, Harry Holland works at Cardiff. His work encompasses a very large array of themes. Some of his paintings tell a story, usually ambiguous or enigmatic, others are caprice (fancies, fictions, evocations of a past mythic world). Portraits and nudes are a important part of his work as well as still life (classical objects-on-a-shelf and less conventional arrangements). As the title suggests, this exhibition is an invitation to enter this world from behind the blindfold of our preconceptions.
A very large following
Harry Holland was born in Glasgow in 1941. He trained at St. Martin's School of Art, in London, from 1965-69. Since the 1970s this outstanding classical artist has had over 30 solo exhibitions and figured in countless group exhibitions worldwide. Not surprisingly, his work has developed a substantial international following amongst collectors and has found its way into numerous important public collections including the Tate Gallery, British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, National Museum of Wales, National Portrait Gallery Canada, Welsh Arts Council, European Parliament Collection, Belgian National Collection and the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge.
