Dear artist,

We all know that the ones who most suffer from austerity are the weakest, the most fragile among us. Artists areno exception, more so since they seem like acrobats, going through life on a tightrope, holding on to a pendulum to avoid falling into the void of precariousness. Given these conditions, and that you are once again requested to contribute, it is only natural that you should question the need to participate – or not- to the Salon d’Automne, or to any other artistic fair.

Allow me then to point out, in spite of a difficult context, ten good reasons to show your work at the Salon d’Automne.

- This fair is a privileged showcase of the innovating artistic movements of the XXth century in which we find, from Fauvisme to Street Art, the most prestigious names of modern and contemporary Art - from Matisse to Speedy Graphito - including Rodin, Brancusi, Renoir, Cézanne, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Bonnard, Vasarely, de Staël, Zao Wou-Ki and Willy Ronis, among others. The Salon d’Automne has an undisputed renown in France and abroad and offers artists a “label” that is the symbol of prestige and high quality.

- From its origin it has a code of ethics of “Arts Fraternity” that places visual artists, independently from the techniques they use, in tune with the literary, poetic and musical expressions, as well as with dance, haute couture, cinema and theatre. The Salon d’Automne is a predominantly artistic moment where the visual arts are a warm hearth that attracts other events. The latter graft on this annual exhibition, give it a certain rhythm and enrich it with the great diversity of unlimited creativity.

- The Salon d’Automne is not a venue where artists, like in the good old XIXth century, hang their works and -full of hope -await a buyer. It is above all a place for dialogues, exchanges and confrontations of all types. This humanistic dimension greatly favours encounters where everything is possible, opening new, unsuspected perspectives for the artists. This does not prevent collectors, gallery owners and art dealers from strolling about in great numbers simply to shop!

- Indeed, artistic SOLIDARITY was written into the DNA of the Salon d’Automne when it was created in 1905. It is expressed in various ways, whether by formulating fair demands that are carried to the highest level of the State: as an example, we can refer to the recent Manifest of the Salon d’Automne: “Against official State-supported art, in favor of diversity”, to the support that allows the most needy artists to show their works in spite of a disastrous financial situation, and last but not least the important budget dedicated to promoting the annual exhibition over the media. The Salon d’Automne participated to the major demonstration on 11 January following the shootings at Charlie Hebdo in which their two most recent sponsors, Cabu and Wolinski, were murdered. By its presence the Salon showed its solidarity with these immense artists who exhibited on its walls.

- Its location on the Champs Elysées, the “most beautiful avenue in the world”, offers the Salon d’Automne unique visibility and contributes to attract professional artists from around the world.

- Admission to the Salon is free of charge and this has greatly contributed to its success. It hosted 1 500 visitors in Charenton in 2004, and officially declared over 30 000 visitors during its last edition in 2014! The Salon d’Automne has not only known how to call back its public, it has enlarged it and through its aura has reached a unique popularity, from which the exhibiting artists greatly benefit!

- The Salon d’Automne International has bloomed all over the world – the SAI, the latest bud, consolidates and continuously enlarges the international audience of this association of artists.

-Associative democracy are not simply words at the Salon d’Automne, where the Administration Board takes most of its decisions and chooses its orientations in full collaboration with all its members.

- Gender equality, the focus of this century, is fully practised at the Salon d’Automne where all members, men or women, exercise their mandate with equal rights, duties and responsibilities.

- Lastly, 112 years after its creation, the Salon d’Automne appears just as young, younger than Springtime, younger than ever before! It feeds on all the sources of the world, englobes the totality of contemporary creation and welcomes without hesitating the most recent vocabularies, whether they belong to the digital world, to urban cartoon strips, to the hip hop culture or to haute couture!

We confirm that today as much as yesterday, and maybe even more than yesterday, the Salon d’Automne is the privileged tool for contemporary artists, the place for all encounters and for all possibilities on the most prestigious avenue in our country, the privileged venue of all artistic fraternities, the one where XXIst century art is written in golden letters!!!

How else can we tell you, dear artist, how welcome you are to come among those whose presence make the Salon d’Automne the major artistic event in our country, the one no one can miss? Thank you for joining us, thank you for being one of us and for trusting us!
