ANTARCTIC BIENNALE 2017

OPEN CALL TO YOUNG ARTISTS

The 1st Antarctic Biennale invites young artists (under 35) to participate in an open call. Participants of the contest shall create a unique art object representing their own vision of Antarctica.

One winner will join an expedition of artists, researchers and thinkers to Antarctica in March 2017. The main artistic group members will be invited by the Artistic Advisory Board of the project and the commissioner Alexander Ponomarev, regardless of their age, sex or nationality. In addition to the winner’s participation in the expedition to Antarctica, fifteen ‘finalists’ will receive invitations to participate in a group exhibition at the Antarctic Pavilion in Venice, Italy, in summer 2017 (www.antarcticpavilion.com). Submitted proposals may embrace any media (such as installation, performance, film, etc.).

The winning project may be implemented onboard the biennale’s expedition vessel, on water, ice, or the Antarctic shore. It must also be in line with the biennale’s motto - mobilis in mobile. In line with conservation ethics set by the Antarctic Treaty Organization and IAATO, no materials may be left behind in Antarctica after the event of the work’s installation/documentation/performance. Furthermore, all projects should have no impact on the continent or its animal inhabitants. Logistical viability will be taken into account when assessing proposals. Concepts must demonstrate basic compatibility with the unique weather and environmental conditions of the region. We also invite the submission of existing video works to be considered for the Antarctic Biennale Cinema screening program. This program will take place onboard the biennale expedition vessel during the 1st Antarctic Biennale, with the potential to be included in subsequent exhibition projects.

The Antarctic Biennale aims to develop cross-disciplinary dialogue between the arts and sciences, and to investigate Antarctica's cultural identity and potential as an international 'shared space'. The project was initiated and commissioned in 2011 by the artist Alexander Ponomarev. The first edition of the Antarctic Biennale is scheduled in March 2017.
