In its sale on November 28 Sotheby's offers lots that are true resumes of the decorative arts of the XXth century, from the inflorescences of Alphonse Mucha's lithographs to the recent creations of the most in vogue designers, such as Ron Arad.

Art Nouveau, from Mucha to Mattes

The first part of the sale gives us the opportunity to rediscover, next to Daum, Gallé and Majorelle, creators who have been only known by collectors. The three highly refined watercolors by Carlos Schwabe (est. 6 000 - 8 000 €) are part of an ensemble of thirty compositions done for Maeterlinck's play, Pelléas et Mélissande . The richly supplied ceramics section rests on Theodore Deck, Ernest Chaplet, Auguste Delaherche, Taxile Doat and also includes a baby head by Jean-Joseph Carriès, who is currently the object of a retrospective at the Petit Palais in Paris. Among the sculptures there is a beautiful bronze by Georg Mattes, Le joueur de ballon (est. 20 000 - 30 000 €), of which an identical copy is at the Kunsthalle in Bremen.

Art Déco, between Dunand and Printz

A similar variety is seen in the Art Deco section, where there is a four-folds screen by Jean Dunand (est. 30 000 - 50 000€), a serpent lamp designed by Edgar Brandt with Daum (est. 15 000 - 20 000 €) as well as two rock crystal chandeliers from the Bagués house. The series of ceramics includes two creations by Gio Ponti for Richard-Ginori. We also may note a complete ensemble of bronzes by Ferdinand Parpan (est. 6 000 and 15 000 €) next to Frédéric C. Foch's sculptures representing Strength and Speed (est. 10 000 -12 000€). A complete assortment of furniture brings together the names of Groult, Jallot, Ruhlmann, Chareau, Dupré-Lafon, Printz (of the latter, a walnut pedestal table-library is estimated between 40 000 and 60 000€).

Design, from Schiaparelli to Ron Arad

The design section closes the sale with some fifteen lots. There is a strange, surrealist, rattan long chair, attributed to Schiaparelli (est. 8 000 - 10 000€), a series of lights by Serge Mouille, a low table by Charlotte Perriand with free shape platter and two pedestal tables by Garouste and Bonetti (from their Trapani series, est. 4 000 - 6 000€). Among the largest pieces, we will note a spectacular pair of chandeliers with forty lights by Gino Sarfatti (est. 20 00 - 25 000€) and two superb mirror-polished steel tables by Ron Arad from the Triennale of Milan in 1995.
