Help and presentation

This dictionary tries to answer some of the problems encountered in bringing together contemporary artists and their potential audience, by indicating the gallery or galleries in France, Belgium and Switzerland  where his or her works can be permanently seen. Only living artists are listed.

How to carry your search

Alphabetical search

By clicking on a letter or group of letters, you can obtain the list of artists whose surnames start with that letter. Then click the name that interests you. You will get the names of the galleries that show that artist’s work, with the corresponding links. That will later be followed by supplementary information on each artist.

Theme-based search (under construction)

The theme-based search, of which you can see a few samples,  will offer you a choice of two options.

Select by technique : a pop up menu gives you the commonest techniques – from acrylic to video. By selecting the technique that interests you, you will get the names of the artists who practise it.

Select by movement : a pop up menu gives you the main movements in contemporary art – from abstract art to ultra avant-garde. By selecting the movement that interests you, you will get the names of the artists belonging to it.

Links with galeries and museums notices

By clicking on the name of a gallery or museum  appearing on the artist's notice, you will get the notice of the corresponding gallery or museum .

Reciprocally, in the galleries directory, if you click on the name of an artist represented by one of the galleries, you will get direct access to his or her notice in the directory.

NB - Some artists work only in pairs or in a group. We feature them together in our dictionary. The name of the artist usually mentioned first should be used in the alphabetical search.

Examples : Pierre & Gilles appear under the letter P

In our answers we give you the artists’ usual names with the original accents. But the search engine deals with accented letters on its own. You can omit cedillas and other accents.
