Throughout the 20th century, from Picasso to Basquiat, including the German expressionists, primitive art has been a source of inspiration for artists. Anthony Meyer, who long ago wished to open his Oceanic art gallery to contemporary art, took the opportunity of the Art Saint Germain des Prés fair to do so, and has promised to renew the experience each year. The artist chosen for this first exhibition is the French sculptor of Peruvian origin, Alberto Guzman.

From Lima to Paris

Born in 1927 in Piura, Peru, Guzman completed his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Lima. He exhibited abstract, soldered iron sculptures as of 1953. It did not take long for him to orient his research towards marble and bronze. In 1959, a scholarship from the French Government allowed him to come to Paris where he held his first exhibition at the Galerie du Fleuve. Others followed every year, all over the world. One can see his monumental works and his fountains in public places from the place Jeanne d’Arc in Paris to the Olympic Park in Seoul. Sculpture is not his only form of expression. As he could not work marble for a time, he turned towards graphic art with large format inks, as well as to small, refined drawings combining ink, gouache and black lead. He also created stage sets, jewelry and furniture.

Light sculptures

The sculptures exhibited are from 2001 to 2005. They are unique pieces in which the bronze is worked in thin layers, in Reliefs, ornate with traces, lines and writings. Are these far away reminders of the pre-Colombian, enigmatic drawings found on the ground in the desert of Nazca in his native Peru, of the ripples on the sand of the dune landscapes of his childhood? His are sculptures of light. Alberto Guzman gets his inspiration from Nature, from the earth, the sand, the stars and light. He explains: I love the mountains, water falls, nature, dunes, schools of fish, the accumulation of the elements that touch me and are the catalysts that awaken the shapes that are in me....
