The Jesuits wished to carry the spectator and the believer into a mystic extasis, and to react in face of the Lutheran Regorm which endangered the Church. These theologic aims conditioned all the artistic current between 1580 and 1680, and were expressed both in painting and in sculpture, as well as architecture. |
