Jannis Kounellis lives and works in Rome and was a co-founder of the Arte Povera movement starting out from Italy in the 1960ies. In his work he deals with the issue of historical and cultural identity caught between past and present and in his artistic oeuvre he transcends the traditional boundaries of art. Canvas and wood having been left behind as a picture carrier the room itself becomes the actual picture surface. His exhibitions are stage productions reflecting our existence between life and death, power and destruction.
